It's been a long time, dating back to the 1960s since we've seen a forged iron from the company who literally ushered all of golf into the era of cast-made irons. We're excited to see how they look, feel and perform.

Tiger's New Putter

Tell us what you think. Will a new putter help cure Tiger's putting woes?

Either way, Tiger ditched his Scott Cameron Newport 2 (a putter he has used for more than 11 years) in favor of the Nike Method putter. Which, speaking of, closely resembles the Newport 2, with exception to the putterface. The Method has "polymetal groove tech" that according to Nike, helps promote a faster, truer roll.

Tiger isn't a fan of slower greens like they have this week at St Andrews, so he made the switch to the Method (model #001, by the way) to help manage the long, sometimes ridiculously long, putts that golfers face out on those greens. The Method also happens to be the same putter Stewart Cink used last year to with the Open Championship. Hmmm...

Push Cart Magic

So, it was the first time I had used a push cart in a long, long time. And well, after trying one recently, I can't help but feel foolish having gone so long carrying a heavy, awkward, shirt-tearing, neck-blistering golf bag on my back...

A couple days ago I put the new Trekker TC Freestyle Push Cart into play. After what I feared would be a laborious process (I remember back when a push cart was called a pull cart and they were a pain in the rear to not only use, but to pack away in the trunk), the Trekker immediately proved itself to be a cinch to use.

Assembly: First off all, I didn't take a peek at the directions. Why? I really didn't need to. The cart unfolds and folds up in probably the easiest, most intuitive way possible. The only part that I had to think for oh, about 10 seconds, was how to fold the wheels up. But like I said, it hardly strained my thoughts. A push and click here and the cart was easily assembled, the bag was simply secured. And after the round, it was just as easy to pack away into the trunk.

Portability: There are some carts that may be a little smaller when transformed into what I call "trunk mode", but I'd be hard-pressed to find a lighter, easier-to-handle configuration. It's light, but not too light. This is a good thing because it aids in stability when you actually use it.

Stability: When using the Trekker out on the golf course, because the bag sits relatively upright I was a bit nervous the thing would tip over. Mind you, I was playing on a hilly course, the Trekker never once fell over. Don't tell, but I even let the cart "ghost ride" down a few small hills, again, with no club spills whatsoever. I'm not saying I recommend doing that, because the cart could definitely topple over if you're reckless, but under normal conditions, stability is hardly an issue.

Usability: I liked that the Trekker has not only a drink holder, but a compartment that is magnetically sealed right by the handle. It felt so secure that I stored my valuables such as my phone and keys in there (yes, the phone was off--sorta). It's more designed for a scorecard, but it's big enough to hold some goodies in there as well. (There's also a mesh pouch for bigger items.) The grip on the hand felt fine, and the adjustability of the handle up or down seemed simple enough as it worked the same way pull carts have worked for years. Loosen the handle, realign the teeth at the desired height, then tighen it down.

However, if there is one thing I would liked to have seen regarding the handle adjustablity, that'd be a better locking system. The teeth and handle are both non-metal (plastic), meaning not only did it feel less secure, I actually thought I could break it quite easily if I had tightened it too much or if I didn't have the teeth aligned properly. So, as a result there were a couple instances where the handle actually feel down because I was a bit reluctant to tighen the handle too much. A moot point by some, and no, I didn't break anything after tightening the hand a little more than I was comfortable with. Nevertheless, I think if this mechanism was metal it'd be better.

Finally, I used a carry bag with the Trekker, but I'm assuming any size bag will work will on this cart. I did have to lay my bag on it's side to get it secured, but that's because my carry bag has legs and they got in the way if I had situated the bag in the traditional way. Not a big deal.

Wheels/push-ability: It's a piece of cake to use and easy to maneuver all over the course. The wheels are large, stable and smooth. Better yet, this cart makes no noise. There are no rattles, squeaks or creaks. Ahh, that's how it should be.

Braking system: One of the best features of the Trekker TC3 is the easy to use, handlebar-style brake lever. Its right where the hands are, and it easy engages and disengages at the click of the lever or button on top of the handle (to release it). It also prevents the unwanted "Oh no, there goes my bag," situation.

Conclusion: I'll be using the Trekker again. And again. It's very well made, very intuitive and easy to use. My only gripe is the handle adjustment mechanism, but even still, that doesn't come close to deterring me from using the Trekker TC3. It really does make playing the game a lot more fun, not to mention it takes the unwanted stress off your shoulders, back and neck.

Bubba's Driver Shaft

Been wondering what shaft Bubba Watson is using in his driver? You know, the bright pink one with the steel section towards the tip? It's actually a Grafalloy prototype that's not available to the public (yet, we hope). We suspect the steel section aids in keeping Bubba's smashing drives from ballooning, thus helping him milk out drives that regularly pass the 310-yard mark.

We can't help to be reminded of this shaft, though... It's the True Temper Bi Matrix shaft, also with a steel tip and graphite shaft. Hmmm...

Nike just announced that in march, the new Machspeed driver will be hitting golf shops across the US. What's new about it?

How sweet are those? Grain-Flow Forged (a fancy term for a very concise and pure forging), and with a unique titanium-filled muscle section, the MP-58s are built for players who want the best blend of forgiveness and shotmaking capabilities.

Penta, as in pentagon, as in five, get it?

We get it, but don't ask us how they did it. The folks at TaylorMade, under the watchful eye of Dean Snell and his beautiful mind, conjured up the first 5-piece golf ball.

Yeah, not one, two or even four layers. We're talkin' 5!

On the surface, its a urethane-covered ball with multiple layers that depending on how hard you swing, performs differently with the different clubs in the bag. TaylorMade claims that even the best players in the world playing the so-called best balls available have still had to make compromises, either for more distance and less spin, or more spin and less distance, more feel vs. less feel and so on. The Penta is said to be the most complete ball ever and with it's five layers, means no more having to choose one performance benefit over another.

The highly anticipated introduction of Nike Golf’s new METHOD putter today satisfied the curiosity generated by the Nike Golf prototype putter that is already responsible for two major championship titles and three other Tour victories worldwide. The much talked about putter also represents the emergence of yet another ground
breaking innovation from Nike Golf’s Research and Development center, The OVEN. The

I guess the cat's out of the bag, kinda-sorta.

It's British Open week and Ping unveiled a couple new drivers for the tour professionals to tinker with. The G15, a newer more beefy version of the G10 that launches the ball with less spin on a higher trajectory. And the i15, geared more for faster swingers has a more rounded shape and a more forward CG for more penetrating drives.

That's about all we know so far on these two new drivers, but stay tuned as more info comes out.

Rory Wins With Oversized Grip

I'll be honest (when am I not?):

I watched absolutely zero golf this past weekend. While I was occupied eating (a lot) and watching metal things explode at the movies and paying tribute to those who served (I highly recommend you all visit a military base or cemetery to truly know how great their sacrifices were), Rory Sabbatini took the top honors at the Byron Nelson.

Good for him. Good for the Tour.

I know, a lot of you might not be fans of his considering he's not known for being the most cordial player on Tour. Nonetheless, he makes golf more watchable, more dramatic and dare I say, slightly cooler.

Anyway, in addition to a bag mostly made up of TaylorMade gear, Rory also used an oversized Tiger Shark Ultra-Tac Jumbo grip. The bigger grip, so they say, relaxes the hands to prevent the yips and helps golfers make better, more repeatable putting strokes.

The ugliest travel bag on earth.

I've never understood why luggage manufacturers insist on making luggage in black, or dark blue, or dark gray. If anything, I'm a big advocate in making luggage stand out. I'd by neon green luggage if I could. I want to see my luggage from afar so I know exactly where to go once I hit the dreaded baggage claim. Louder luggage also acts a deterrent to thievery. I've had my clubs stolen once--I don't want it to happen again.

Which, leads me to my point about what is probably the ugliest golf travel bag I've seen. The one listed above is covered in some sort of artsy, unintelligible grafitti--something that's probably more equated with some rough and tough rocker's gear than would be with a set of golf clubs. Such a design makes the travel bag stand out in a hurry.

Nonetheless, the graffiti bag is made of thick, strong nylon and comes with a removable pouch. There are wheels too and a reinforced bottom and extra padding up top.

Can you believe it? It's finally here! TaylorMade almost made it through the spring without introducing a new driver to the public! Man, it's been so long since we've seen something new from TM!

We're kidding of course. But it is true--TaylorMade has developed a serious reputation for having the shortest attention span in golf. Seems like every time we turn our eyes back on them, a new club iteration is ready to be introduced.

Anyway, the R9 460 is, well, a 460cc version of the R9--sans screws. Yes, that's right. The R9 is bigger, but the adjustable weights are gone, leaving the golfer only with the hosel to adjust ballflight, trajectory and so forth.

Now, logic would tell us that this was the model to introduce before the R9, but hey, we just report on the stuff. We have an R9 460 here in the office (somewhere) and haven't tried it, but when we do we'll be happy to report on it right here on our blog.

Odds are its another outstanding performer from TaylorMade. But then again, aren't they all?

I can remember back when the best ball around was the Precept EV Extra Spin (in my opinion.) And although it may seem like eons ago since I played one (about 10 years, actually), a fellow colleague of mine asked me if they were still available.

Are Tiger Woods and Anthony Kim getting smaller?

Not in the least. Tiger is bigger and badder than ever. AK isn't too shabby himself, proving that his petite frame is capable of hitting towering drives.

So, what are we talking about? Well, the next time you catch these two players hitting tee shots on television, pause your DVR anywhere you have a chance to take a peek at their new 3-woods...

Here's the secret: Those aren't 3-woods. Both Tiger and AK have allegedly (I say allegedly because it's unofficial) been using 380cc versions of Nike's DYMO driver.

380cc? Huh?

That's 80cc's smaller than the limit. Tiger is on record saying he's always preferred a smaller head, which makes sense when you're a tour player who frankly, misses the sweetpot a lot less often than we do. Also, a smaller head helps prevent too much backspin---a common frustration fast swingers have when using 460cc heads.

For the rest of us though, 460cc heads aren't going anywhere. At least not for now. Some companies have scaled down a bit (the TaylorMade r9 is 420cc's), but generally club manufacturers agree that bigger is better in terms of overall forgiveness and distance. Then again, who knows? Maybe club companies are starting to look towards smaller heads to help further optimize launch/spin for an even greater mass of golfers.

Callaway Big Bertha Diablo Golf Balls

Darn, I was actually hoping to see some tattoo graphics or something on the new Callaway BB Diablo golf balls. Guess we'll just have to settle for a very soft-feeling, long-hitting golf ball. Hmmph. ($24/doz)

Maybe soft isn't the right word for such an aggressive ball. How about "resilient"? Bouncy? I think you get the idea. We tried them and hit the ball further than normal. About a club further than normal, actually. Wowzers.

The New Apple iPod Shuffle

I know, it's a stretch to blog about the new Apple iPod Shuffle on a Golf Tips Blog. But bear with me.

The new iPod Shuffle is officially ridiculously small. It's about the size of a piece of Trident gum. It's almost invisible. In fact, it's just a matter of time until we get rid of those clumsy, wired earphones and we start using hearing-aid style earbuds that are cord free...

What's any of this iPod Shuffle have to do with golf? Simply put, as an editor, I rarely practice my golf game without some sort of iPod. Having music, whatever style that may be, helps me block out what else is going on the range and if anything, helps me build a better rhythm and flow. Also, it distracts me from over-analyzing my swing (Something I do a lot. Probably because it's my job to help instructors dissect all sorts of golf swings).

The new iPod Shuffle? Well, it's tiny, meaning you can take it anywhere, including the practice center. Better yet, if you happen to play golf alone (ohh, you're so lucky), having an iPod keeps you entertained between shots. Again, I use mine whenever I can on the course (but not when I'm playing with someone. That's just plain rude.) ($80)

Find Your Center Axis

One of the most innovative putters for 2009 is one that will most definitely take some getting used to (in a good way, of course).

The Axis 1 employed a curved heel that moves the heel weight forward from the clubface in order to align the sweetspot in a straight line with the shaft. I.e., if the shaft went all the way to the ground, the sweetspot would be right on it. Now, go ahead. Take a second to digest that...

Sounds pretty cool doesn't it? Wait until you try it. The feel is amazing and unlike anything else out there. The looks are a bit weird, but who cares? The pendulum-like feel and balance is awesome and fewer putts always looks better on the scorecard.

An adjustable wedge? Could it be?

Remember that "Whole-In-One" iron that had the adjustable lofts? I do. I also remember trying it and darn near breaking my hands with the horrible feeling it produced. I don't think it was ever designed to be hit, rather it was a novelty. Maybe that's why my granddad kept it in his study and not in his bag.

Oh well.

Anyway, a Asian company with a really weird name, S.God, has developed a wedge that has an adjustable sole/bounce angle. Called the Viper, the sole of the wedge can be removed and replaced (presumably) with other sole inserts of more or lesser degrees of bounce angle.

Hmmm. It's interesting, and I'm not sure if it's USGA conforming. Nonetheless, we like seeing new ideas and who knows, maybe it's just a matter of time until we start seeing something like that over here in the States. Decipher more information on it HERE.

Y.E. Yang and TaylorMade Win the Honda Classic

Y.E. Yang may not the be the most popular golfer on the PGA Tour (I'll bet he's a huge star in So. Korea, though), but his win last week proved he might soon become one. (We especially liked his Hale Irwin-esque victory lap around the 18th green.)

Showmanship aside, Yang also showcased a lot of talent and a keen ability to hit a variety of golf shots, many of which he did by using a bag with more headcovers than we usually see on the PGA Tour.

Now, if Yang's bag seems unusual, especially considering the near overlap in lofts when comparing the fairway woods and hybrids, the reality is Yang's bag should actually serve as a model for the average golfer and not an anomaly.

Hybrids and fairway woods can in fact overlap in loft, mainly since loft is just one trait in the design and function of the club. I.e., a 18-degree fairway wood and 18-degree hybrid are mostly likely not going to travel the same distance. Hybrids have shorter shafts and lower CGs that fairway woods, meaning they launch the ball higher and with more spin that do most fairway woods.

So, before you go out and buy new fairway woods and hybrids, be sure and test drive a few different models and don't worry so much about the loft or model. Instead, use a Trackman to see what clubs fill the gaps in your distances and round out your set.

Putt Like The PGA Tour's Aaron Baddeley

Sorry, I must be really into my iPhone today. (See the post below if you're just getting here.)

Another cool and creative means to take advantage of video on the iPhone, or on any computer or mobile device that can handle video, is the latest product from a company called seeitgolf.

(But before I try and describe it, know that renowned golf psychologist David Cook, top instructor Stan Utley and our very own GT instructor, Jeff Yurkiewicz have their hands in on it. So you know it's gonna be good.)

seeitgolf has created the first of what will be a complete series of videos designed to help train the mind and eyes to envision the perfect putting stroke, line, rhythm and so on. They did it by filming the darn, near-perfect putting stroke of Aaron Baddeley, amidst a dark background with some stellar graphics and beautiful cinematography. Better yet, red graphics are used to simulate the putting line and an added music score further helps ingrain a fluid tempo, rhythm and visual connection with the intended putting line.

Best of all, you don't have to do anything to become a better putter. Just watch it. And then watch it again. Watch the fifteen minute video whenever you have free time. The mental imagery will stick with you and hopefully translate into making you a better putter.

Must Have iPhone App For Golfers

If you're like one of the three GT editors who has yet to succumb to the power of the iPhone, you don't know what you're missing. First, having an iPhone means you're cool. It means you're hip and trendy. Second, it means you are a better person than those who don't have iPhones. You want to be superior? Get an iPhone.

I'm kidding (although there are some people here in LA who might believe that). But seriously, the iPhone can do some amazing things. Among the gazillion iPhone "apps" (that's short for applications) are a handful of new and exciting apps designed specifically for golfers that make use of the iPhone's 3G GPS technology.

What's that mean? Well, in short, it means your iPhone can double as a handheld GPS yardage device. Nooo way? Yes way. Does it work? Totally, dude.

We've experimented with the View Ti software for the iPhone, and to our surprise, the interface was easy to handle, downloading courses was done wirelessly and on the fly (we actually downloaded a course while AT the course) and when compared to an actual GPS device, the yardages on the iPhone were spot on.

What are the negatives? Well, the GPS can suck up the iPhone's battery power, but if you reduce the screen brightness that helps. Also, if and when you get a phone call, you'll need to reboot the app. (Hey, you shouldn't talk on the golf on the golf course anyway.) Other than those minor issues, we were pleased with how well it performed.

Best of all? We paid a whopping $12.99 for the basic app. It didn't come with maps, scorekeeping, etc., but those kinds of features are available in other apps that cost a few dollars more.

Unknowingly to us, Titleist has been quietly packaging golf balls into interesting boxes for certain types of special events. Golf Pride BCT Tour Wrap Grip

How many of you remember the classic Tour Wrap grip from Golf Pride? Not only was it one of the most popular grips around 10-15 years ago, it also was available in a corded version for people who wanted some extra grip and firmness in the grip.

Only thing was, the corded Tour Wrap was pretty tough on the hands. In fact, unless you were able to play daily and build up some calluses, using corded grips meant having some sore hands the following day.

More Than Meets the Eye

Here are two new bags from Ogio that, at first glance, look pretty standard, but are anything but.

The "Bus" looks innocent enough. It's a rolling duffel bag that has multiple grab handles, oversized zipper pulls and urethane wheels. But peel its top off from its magnetically secured position and, voila, you've got yourself a carry-on messenger bag. It's the perfect way to save space and weight when you fly.

Ogio applied a similar concept to their "Devolver" golf bag. Note how it breaks down into three golf bags (cart, carry, "Sunday")? Seems like the Salt Lake City company thinks 2009 will be a, er, transformative one.

TP Red Too Fast

Golfweek's James Achenbach reports today on TaylorMade's decision to recall some of its TP Red LDP golf balls because they "exceed the U.S. Golf Association's initial velocity limit. " The Carlsbad, California company has "voluntarily...removed the ball from the USGA's Conforming Ball List, effective March 2."

The current TP Red LDP will be replaced March 2 on the Conforming Ball List by a new TP Red LDP with a revised sidestamp. The new balls will carry a "TP Red Tournament Edition" sticker on all boxes and sleeves.

The TP Red LDP ball was launched in June 2007, and has been manufactured in TaylorMade's Duncan, S.C., facility for about 20 months. Of all the TP Red LDP balls that were produced, "less than two-tenths of 1 percent" violated the velocity rule, according to the company.

TaylorMade declined to specify exactly how many nonconforming balls were produced, although director of public relations Christa McNamara said, "You have a better chance of winning the lottery than finding one of these."

This recall, while necessary, raises a question going forward: should the USGA consider upping limits on equipment? Would that help grow the game again? Discuss.

Tiger Woods Is Back!

What, have you been under a rock? In case you haven't heard, Tiger is back on the PGA Tour.

Also in the news for your gearheads out there, is the fact that Tiger himself played an active role in designing a trio of new clubs from Nike Golf. Dubbed the Victory Red Irons, golfs can choose from any mix of forgiving cavity backs, tour blades and split-cavity irons in between. Tiger obviously plays the blade models, but we tried all three and have to say that the split-cavity model felt as good as the blades. The cavity-backs? Well, consider them ideal for you Tiger wannabes who don't have the luxury of playing golf every other day like some of you do. ($899)

Digital scorekeepers: I mean, really. Have we reached the point where we are using technology to go in reverse? What could be easier than a scorecard and a pencil? Better yet, a pencil with an eraser? ($ Varies)

Tabasco Golf Shirts: What does hot sauce have to do with golf shirts anyway? If anything, don't you want to avoid the two coming into contact? Yes, we are all for being patriotic. But not in some sort of weird, Salvador Dali-my-golf-clubs-are-falling-out-of-my-bag-heaven-help-me sort of way. ($52.50)

The Potty Putter: I can't believe I even had the time to add this one. Look at that model. I'll bet his mom is really proud. Talk about a water haza--I'm not going there.

Okay everybody: I just spent all day at Riviera CC (The Northern Trust Open), and couldn't help but notice that most players on the range had some sort of training aid nearby. So for those of you who think you're too good for some gadget that promises to help you lower your score, think again. The best player in the world use them too.

While it's becoming more and more difficult to find gas powered carts (outside of the maintenance kind), battery-powered golf carts still hog up a big chunk of energy. So what's a golfer to do if you want to be eco-friendly without pushing a cart or carrying a bag?

Using 72 "photovoltaic cells built into the roof that collect solar energy", this sweet ride provides up to 33% more usage than standard electric carts. These are Not Your Grandmas Headcovers

If you're ever been to a PGA Tour event, one thing you will find in almost every player's bag is at least one unique headcover on a driver, fairway wood or even hybrid. For years, Jan Craig has been manufacturing the best custom, hand-knit headcovers around. And in case you didn't know they're the ones with the big, floppy tassel or pom, both in a variety of colors and shapes for any club in the bag (including putter). One of our favorite new golf balls in '09 is the Tour B-330RX. And while the name sounds more like the inscription you may find on a tank, these balls perform more like like missiles through the air. Made of four-pieces (when are we going to see a five-piece by the way?), it's the first ball that we've seen that's designed for golfers who have average swingspeeds who want big distance off the tee and a ton of playability around the greens. Ok, sure, we like Skittles. Say what you will about that and other forms of rainbow tasting. But when it comes to grips, the Iomic grip company delivers not only some of the coolest looking and most colorful grips around, but also grips that are made of an interesting Elastomer that frankly, do not feel like any other grip we've tried. The combination of firmness with tackiness and shock absorption is welcoming, and they also hold up very well in the rain. My only gripe? The butt diameter is smaller than most grips. You have to hand it to Boo Weekley.

Camo (that's short for camouflage for all you people west of the Mississippi) had never been en vogue until he popularized it with his po'dunk personality and style. Nonetheless, we know the truth behind Boo's schtick, and while he may not appear to the bet sharpest tool in the shed, we no doubt think he's one of the coolest, most savvy and most fun-to-watch players on the PGA Tour.

One of the hottest new shafts for 2009 is the Fujikura Motore. Meaning "engine" in Italian, the Motore shaft is rigged with some cool technology that helps golfers deliver maximum energy into the golf ball.

While it's not available to buy on the rack just yet, clubmakers such as TaylorMade have already implemented this shaft as a stock option in some of their upcoming drivers (specifically, the r9.) Why? Because it's just that good.
