From Golfsmith.com:
The Scotty Cameron California Putter has a classic design with modern weighting. This club provides clean aesthetics while offering better balance and higher inertia for a solid feel. Select Weight Technology offers greater choices for length and weight to enhance performance for all types of players. Milled from soft, 303 stainless steel, the California putter has a soft sound and feel that promotes precise distance control. A honey-dipped finish provides a deep, rich non-glare appearance while the stepless steel shaft provides a clean, uninterrupted look at the ball in the address position as well as promoting better putter head feel throughout the stroke. The black Cameron Tour grip creates a soft, controlled feel for precise feedback.

Additional Features:

  • High-Toe Profile: Aids alignment and eliminates the tendency to raise the toe at address causing a player to aim the putter to the left of the target
Models:
  • Monterrey- A double-step flange with a pocket and plumbing neck
  • Coronado- A double-step flange with a flow neck
  • Sonoma- A compact mallet with a plumbing neck
  • Del Mar- A mid mallet with a flow neck

According to Cobra,

"The new multi-material Cobra S2 Irons offer improved accuracy, distance and forgiveness in a high-performance package. The new cavity design with optimized heel-toe weighting utilizes lightweight polymer materials that allow discretionary weight to be pushed low in the heel and toe, to increase MOI. Plus, the unique Mid-Width Stepped Sole offers superior turf interaction. Cobra S2 Irons will appeal to avid golfers of all skill levels due their superior playability, feel and design."

We think they look pretty sweet, not to mention very playable. Look for them at retailers NOW.

TaylorMade has introduced the R9 iron, designed to deliver modern performance and tremendous distance in a more classic package.

"Whereas our Burner irons deliver extraordinary distance in a modern design, the R9 irons are aimed at the technician, and so are rendered in a player's shape with a clean and conventional look," said Harry Arnett, TaylorMade's senior category director of metalwoods, irons and balls. "However, a ridiculous degree of performance-enhancing technology is packaged within each oversized clubhead. The result is an iron that's phenomenally easy to play despite its classic appearance, and extremely controllable and accurate as well."

Like the Burner irons, the new R9 long-irons and middle-irons were designed separately from the short-irons to optimize performance in each club. The result is that the 3-iron through 6-iron are extremely long and easy to hit, and the short-irons are engineered to promote great feel, control and accuracy.

Quick hits:

Velocity-Control Chamber in the Long- and Middle-irons
Each R9 long-iron and middle-iron (3- through 6-) houses a large and fully enclosed compartment positioned behind the clubface, underneath the cavity badge. Called the Velocity-Control Chamber (VCC), it makes it possible for an immense area of the ultra-thin (2.0 mm)
clubface to exist unsupported.

Deep Undercut Cavity, Broad Low-CG Sole and Heel-Toe Weighting in the Short-irons
R9 short-irons are engineered to deliver increased playability, control and feel in the scoring zone.

Beveled Sole in Every Iron Promotes Solid Contact and Playability
The sole of every R9 iron is specially beveled to reduce turf resistance, helping the bottom of the club glide through impact and apply maximum force to the ball.

New and Conforming Grooves for 2010
The R9 TP irons incorporate a new groove design that conforms to the USGA and R&A ruling that goes into affect in 2010 for high-level competition.

KBS Steel Shafts
R9 irons come equipped with KBS 90-gram steel shafts, available in S and R flexes. KBS, which is quickly growing in popularity on the PGA Tour, incorporates several new enhancements into their steel shafts to promote improved performance.

The standard set of R9 irons includes 3-iron through pitching wedge at a manufacturer's suggested retail price (MSRP) of $999 steel and $1,249 graphite. An attack wedge and sand wedge are available separately. R9 irons become available starting on November 1, 2009.

Penta, as in pentagon, as in five, get it?

We get it, but don't ask us how they did it. The folks at TaylorMade, under the watchful eye of Dean Snell and his beautiful mind, conjured up the first 5-piece golf ball.

Yeah, not one, two or even four layers. We're talkin' 5!

On the surface, its a urethane-covered ball with multiple layers that depending on how hard you swing, performs differently with the different clubs in the bag. TaylorMade claims that even the best players in the world playing the so-called best balls available have still had to make compromises, either for more distance and less spin, or more spin and less distance, more feel vs. less feel and so on. The Penta is said to be the most complete ball ever and with it's five layers, means no more having to choose one performance benefit over another.

It also means no more having to choose one premium performance ball over another from TaylorMade. Unlike past tour-inspired models lie the TP Red and TP Black, there is only one ball to choose from. Ahhh...thank you, TaylorMade.

Look for it this fall at a retailer near you.

Tiger Shark Grip Sheds Weight...

Tiger Shark Golf Introduces New Super Jumbo Lite Putter Grip

The latest putter grip from Tiger Shark Golf, the #1 Jumbo Putter Grips on Tour, is the lightest of any oversized putter grip on the market. At an amazing overall weight of 67 grams, the Super Jumbo Lite weighs the same as a standard sized grip at 250% the size.

The Tiger Shark R&D team said the Super Jumbo Lite was designed to be a jumbo putter grip that does not drastically affect a putter's swing weight or overall feel.

"This is one of the few light weight jumbo putter grip that will not change the feel or swing weight of a putter," said Tiger Shark President Dean Dingman. "This gives golfers the benefit of a more stable stroke while maintaining the same swing weight and overall weight of the putter."

Most jumbo grips weigh up to 270 grams, which raises the putter's swing weight significantly. With this design, the grip is able to be significantly larger than a standard sized putter grip without changing the weight, creating the largest putter grip to not drastically change the swing-weight of a putter. Tiger Shark expects this revolutionary concept to help PGA Tour players and consumers alike.

"The Super Jumbo Lite was very well received at the Buick Open, it's first week being introduced to the players," said Dingman. "With a lot of tour players looking for a bigger grip that isn't too heavy, we have created the perfect lightweight oversized grip. It eliminates your wrists from breaking down and keeps your putter head square without adding any weight to your putter."

The Tiger Shark Super Jumbo Lite putter grip is available in Black, Blue and Red and is now available for purchase at golf retail shops across the nation. To find a dealer near you, call Tiger Shark at 1-800-667-0181.

The ugliest travel bag on earth.

I've never understood why luggage manufacturers insist on making luggage in black, or dark blue, or dark gray. If anything, I'm a big advocate in making luggage stand out. I'd by neon green luggage if I could. I want to see my luggage from afar so I know exactly where to go once I hit the dreaded baggage claim. Louder luggage also acts a deterrent to thievery. I've had my clubs stolen once--I don't want it to happen again.

Which, leads me to my point about what is probably the ugliest golf travel bag I've seen. The one listed above is covered in some sort of artsy, unintelligible grafitti--something that's probably more equated with some rough and tough rocker's gear than would be with a set of golf clubs. Such a design makes the travel bag stand out in a hurry.

Nonetheless, the graffiti bag is made of thick, strong nylon and comes with a removable pouch. There are wheels too and a reinforced bottom and extra padding up top.

Party on and get yours HERE.
(I already did.)

Get Inside John Daly's Pants

Well, maybe not. But you can buy the same kind of pants he's been wearing these days.

The company who has been outfitting Daly with those over-the-top pantalones is called Loudmouth Golf, an appropriate name considering how wild and wacky their apparel is.

Hey, crazy pants are fine with us. It makes the game of golf all that much more fun. Now would you want to wear these out to a steak dinner after the round? Or to the local sports bar? Probably not, but then again there may be some of you who are into that sort of thing.

Get your crazy slacks for about $90 bucks HERE.

The New Apple iPod Shuffle

I know, it's a stretch to blog about the new Apple iPod Shuffle on a Golf Tips Blog. But bear with me.

The new iPod Shuffle is officially ridiculously small. It's about the size of a piece of Trident gum. It's almost invisible. In fact, it's just a matter of time until we get rid of those clumsy, wired earphones and we start using hearing-aid style earbuds that are cord free...

What's any of this iPod Shuffle have to do with golf? Simply put, as an editor, I rarely practice my golf game without some sort of iPod. Having music, whatever style that may be, helps me block out what else is going on the range and if anything, helps me build a better rhythm and flow. Also, it distracts me from over-analyzing my swing (Something I do a lot. Probably because it's my job to help instructors dissect all sorts of golf swings).

The new iPod Shuffle? Well, it's tiny, meaning you can take it anywhere, including the practice center. Better yet, if you happen to play golf alone (ohh, you're so lucky), having an iPod keeps you entertained between shots. Again, I use mine whenever I can on the course (but not when I'm playing with someone. That's just plain rude.) ($80)

I think I've made my point. Go get one. Click HERE.

An adjustable wedge? Could it be?

Remember that "Whole-In-One" iron that had the adjustable lofts? I do. I also remember trying it and darn near breaking my hands with the horrible feeling it produced. I don't think it was ever designed to be hit, rather it was a novelty. Maybe that's why my granddad kept it in his study and not in his bag.

Oh well.

Anyway, a Asian company with a really weird name, S.God, has developed a wedge that has an adjustable sole/bounce angle. Called the Viper, the sole of the wedge can be removed and replaced (presumably) with other sole inserts of more or lesser degrees of bounce angle.

Hmmm. It's interesting, and I'm not sure if it's USGA conforming. Nonetheless, we like seeing new ideas and who knows, maybe it's just a matter of time until we start seeing something like that over here in the States. Decipher more information on it HERE.

Must Have iPhone App For Golfers

If you're like one of the three GT editors who has yet to succumb to the power of the iPhone, you don't know what you're missing. First, having an iPhone means you're cool. It means you're hip and trendy. Second, it means you are a better person than those who don't have iPhones. You want to be superior? Get an iPhone.

I'm kidding (although there are some people here in LA who might believe that). But seriously, the iPhone can do some amazing things. Among the gazillion iPhone "apps" (that's short for applications) are a handful of new and exciting apps designed specifically for golfers that make use of the iPhone's 3G GPS technology.

What's that mean? Well, in short, it means your iPhone can double as a handheld GPS yardage device. Nooo way? Yes way. Does it work? Totally, dude.

We've experimented with the View Ti software for the iPhone, and to our surprise, the interface was easy to handle, downloading courses was done wirelessly and on the fly (we actually downloaded a course while AT the course) and when compared to an actual GPS device, the yardages on the iPhone were spot on.

What are the negatives? Well, the GPS can suck up the iPhone's battery power, but if you reduce the screen brightness that helps. Also, if and when you get a phone call, you'll need to reboot the app. (Hey, you shouldn't talk on the golf on the golf course anyway.) Other than those minor issues, we were pleased with how well it performed.

Best of all? We paid a whopping $12.99 for the basic app. It didn't come with maps, scorekeeping, etc., but those kinds of features are available in other apps that cost a few dollars more.

There. Now do you want an iPhone? Thought so. Find info on the View Ti HERE.

TaylorMade Stand Bags for Cheap!

One of my favorite sites online is woot.com, where shoppers have the option to buy ONE item at a steep discount each and every day. In fact, the item changes on a daily basis and once stuff is sold out, it's gone.

Today, it's a TaylorMade Tourino Stand Bag for under $60 bucks. Yes, really. It's just a little more than a dozen golf balls cost at the local golf shop.

Tiger Woods Is Back!

What, have you been under a rock? In case you haven't heard, Tiger is back on the PGA Tour.

Also in the news for your gearheads out there, is the fact that Tiger himself played an active role in designing a trio of new clubs from Nike Golf. Dubbed the Victory Red Irons, golfs can choose from any mix of forgiving cavity backs, tour blades and split-cavity irons in between. Tiger obviously plays the blade models, but we tried all three and have to say that the split-cavity model felt as good as the blades. The cavity-backs? Well, consider them ideal for you Tiger wannabes who don't have the luxury of playing golf every other day like some of you do. ($899)

Score like Mickelson

Sometimes Phil can't catch a break. Upon defending his title as champion at the Northern Trust Open on the hallowed grounds of Riviera last week, seems the media can't help but put a little asterisk on his win. Hey, I can see the headlines now....

Phil Mickelson wins the Northern Trust Open*
(* the last tournament before Tiger's return to the PGA Tour.)

Nonetheless, Phil played beautifully en route to his win, and he couldn't have done it without optimizing his set. Speaking of which, Phil carries not one, two or three wedges. He actually carries four Callaway X-Forged models.

A 64, 60, gap/strong sand, and pitching wedge. These wedge helps him get up and down from anywhere. ($199.99)

What NOT To Buy!
Usually, we dedicate this blog to helping you find the right stuff to buy online, but once in while we can't help but show you a few things you shouldn't. And by shouldn't, that means if in case you do decide to buy these, don't tell anyone. Keep it to yourself. Trust us.

Callaway Slippers and Travel Mug: Let's see. Slippers than look like golf shoes. That's a good idea...not. ($34.99)

Golf ties: Under no circumstances. Nope. Never. ($19.99)

Shatter Sports Golf Ball: Uh...no. Don't be THAT guy. ($9.99)

Golf Motif cat/dog bowl: If you buy this, your pet better have no more than a 5-handicap. Boy howdy, this is not good.

Digital scorekeepers: I mean, really. Have we reached the point where we are using technology to go in reverse? What could be easier than a scorecard and a pencil? Better yet, a pencil with an eraser? ($ Varies)

Tabasco Golf Shirts: What does hot sauce have to do with golf shirts anyway? If anything, don't you want to avoid the two coming into contact? Yes, we are all for being patriotic. But not in some sort of weird, Salvador Dali-my-golf-clubs-are-falling-out-of-my-bag-heaven-help-me sort of way. ($52.50)

The Potty Putter: I can't believe I even had the time to add this one. Look at that model. I'll bet his mom is really proud. Talk about a water haza--I'm not going there.

There you have it folks. And while I don't recommend you buy these items, I can't help but think each would make a fantastic gift for that special someone in your foursome. Yeah, you know who I mean.
