Bubba's Driver Shaft

Been wondering what shaft Bubba Watson is using in his driver? You know, the bright pink one with the steel section towards the tip? It's actually a Grafalloy prototype that's not available to the public (yet, we hope). We suspect the steel section aids in keeping Bubba's smashing drives from ballooning, thus helping him milk out drives that regularly pass the 310-yard mark.

We can't help to be reminded of this shaft, though... It's the True Temper Bi Matrix shaft, also with a steel tip and graphite shaft. Hmmm...

NEW: Titleist AP1 Irons

According to the product description:

The Titleist AP1 710 Iron Set 4-GW with Steel Shafts are the essence of advanced performance with multi-material, dual cavity forged irons that provide improved feel, great looks, shot control and higher flight with forgiveness for the avid to skilled golfer. The stock shaft is the Nippon NS Pro 105T and the stock grip is the Titleist Tour Velvet.

Now, we have yet to try these irons ourselves, but if the previous AP1 irons were any indication, these irons might be the most playable forged irons (for golfers of all skill) that we've seen out of Titleist---ever. (They won't be shipping until mid-November, but pre-orders are available.)

According to Cobra,

"The new multi-material Cobra S2 Irons offer improved accuracy, distance and forgiveness in a high-performance package. The new cavity design with optimized heel-toe weighting utilizes lightweight polymer materials that allow discretionary weight to be pushed low in the heel and toe, to increase MOI. Plus, the unique Mid-Width Stepped Sole offers superior turf interaction. Cobra S2 Irons will appeal to avid golfers of all skill levels due their superior playability, feel and design."

We think they look pretty sweet, not to mention very playable. Look for them at retailers NOW.

TaylorMade has introduced the R9 iron, designed to deliver modern performance and tremendous distance in a more classic package.

"Whereas our Burner irons deliver extraordinary distance in a modern design, the R9 irons are aimed at the technician, and so are rendered in a player's shape with a clean and conventional look," said Harry Arnett, TaylorMade's senior category director of metalwoods, irons and balls. "However, a ridiculous degree of performance-enhancing technology is packaged within each oversized clubhead. The result is an iron that's phenomenally easy to play despite its classic appearance, and extremely controllable and accurate as well."

Like the Burner irons, the new R9 long-irons and middle-irons were designed separately from the short-irons to optimize performance in each club. The result is that the 3-iron through 6-iron are extremely long and easy to hit, and the short-irons are engineered to promote great feel, control and accuracy.

Quick hits:

Velocity-Control Chamber in the Long- and Middle-irons
Each R9 long-iron and middle-iron (3- through 6-) houses a large and fully enclosed compartment positioned behind the clubface, underneath the cavity badge. Called the Velocity-Control Chamber (VCC), it makes it possible for an immense area of the ultra-thin (2.0 mm)
clubface to exist unsupported.

Deep Undercut Cavity, Broad Low-CG Sole and Heel-Toe Weighting in the Short-irons
R9 short-irons are engineered to deliver increased playability, control and feel in the scoring zone.

Beveled Sole in Every Iron Promotes Solid Contact and Playability
The sole of every R9 iron is specially beveled to reduce turf resistance, helping the bottom of the club glide through impact and apply maximum force to the ball.

New and Conforming Grooves for 2010
The R9 TP irons incorporate a new groove design that conforms to the USGA and R&A ruling that goes into affect in 2010 for high-level competition.

KBS Steel Shafts
R9 irons come equipped with KBS 90-gram steel shafts, available in S and R flexes. KBS, which is quickly growing in popularity on the PGA Tour, incorporates several new enhancements into their steel shafts to promote improved performance.

The standard set of R9 irons includes 3-iron through pitching wedge at a manufacturer's suggested retail price (MSRP) of $999 steel and $1,249 graphite. An attack wedge and sand wedge are available separately. R9 irons become available starting on November 1, 2009.

The ugliest travel bag on earth.

I've never understood why luggage manufacturers insist on making luggage in black, or dark blue, or dark gray. If anything, I'm a big advocate in making luggage stand out. I'd by neon green luggage if I could. I want to see my luggage from afar so I know exactly where to go once I hit the dreaded baggage claim. Louder luggage also acts a deterrent to thievery. I've had my clubs stolen once--I don't want it to happen again.

Which, leads me to my point about what is probably the ugliest golf travel bag I've seen. The one listed above is covered in some sort of artsy, unintelligible grafitti--something that's probably more equated with some rough and tough rocker's gear than would be with a set of golf clubs. Such a design makes the travel bag stand out in a hurry.

Nonetheless, the graffiti bag is made of thick, strong nylon and comes with a removable pouch. There are wheels too and a reinforced bottom and extra padding up top.

Party on and get yours HERE.
(I already did.)

The New Apple iPod Shuffle

I know, it's a stretch to blog about the new Apple iPod Shuffle on a Golf Tips Blog. But bear with me.

The new iPod Shuffle is officially ridiculously small. It's about the size of a piece of Trident gum. It's almost invisible. In fact, it's just a matter of time until we get rid of those clumsy, wired earphones and we start using hearing-aid style earbuds that are cord free...

What's any of this iPod Shuffle have to do with golf? Simply put, as an editor, I rarely practice my golf game without some sort of iPod. Having music, whatever style that may be, helps me block out what else is going on the range and if anything, helps me build a better rhythm and flow. Also, it distracts me from over-analyzing my swing (Something I do a lot. Probably because it's my job to help instructors dissect all sorts of golf swings).

The new iPod Shuffle? Well, it's tiny, meaning you can take it anywhere, including the practice center. Better yet, if you happen to play golf alone (ohh, you're so lucky), having an iPod keeps you entertained between shots. Again, I use mine whenever I can on the course (but not when I'm playing with someone. That's just plain rude.) ($80)

I think I've made my point. Go get one. Click HERE.

An adjustable wedge? Could it be?

Remember that "Whole-In-One" iron that had the adjustable lofts? I do. I also remember trying it and darn near breaking my hands with the horrible feeling it produced. I don't think it was ever designed to be hit, rather it was a novelty. Maybe that's why my granddad kept it in his study and not in his bag.

Oh well.

Anyway, a Asian company with a really weird name, S.God, has developed a wedge that has an adjustable sole/bounce angle. Called the Viper, the sole of the wedge can be removed and replaced (presumably) with other sole inserts of more or lesser degrees of bounce angle.

Hmmm. It's interesting, and I'm not sure if it's USGA conforming. Nonetheless, we like seeing new ideas and who knows, maybe it's just a matter of time until we start seeing something like that over here in the States. Decipher more information on it HERE.

MacGregor Golf BLOWOUT Sale

We aren't happy to see the MacGregor brand in such a mess. It's long been one of the strongest brand names in golf, and we hope one day it returns to its former glory. They've always made some great stuff.

In fact, the most recent crop of MacGregor products are really good, and for a short time you can get your hands on a bunch of different drivers, fairway woods, irons and putters for dirt cheap.

Again, we hope MacGregor gets its act together. It deserves it. Do them a favor and buy this stuff up.

Golf Pride BCT Tour Wrap Grip

How many of you remember the classic Tour Wrap grip from Golf Pride? Not only was it one of the most popular grips around 10-15 years ago, it also was available in a corded version for people who wanted some extra grip and firmness in the grip.

Only thing was, the corded Tour Wrap was pretty tough on the hands. In fact, unless you were able to play daily and build up some calluses, using corded grips meant having some sore hands the following day.

Golf Pride has since then completely fixed the problem. The new line of BCT grips (which includes a corded Tour Wrap version shown) are corded, but the cotton material is much softer and less abrasive. In fact, we're willing to go as far as to say they might be the softest corded grips we've ever tried. They still retain plenty of tackiness in wet weather, only now they're much easier to handle. We like that!

Multiple colors and styles are available. Learn more HERE.

TaylorMade Stand Bags for Cheap!

One of my favorite sites online is woot.com, where shoppers have the option to buy ONE item at a steep discount each and every day. In fact, the item changes on a daily basis and once stuff is sold out, it's gone.

Today, it's a TaylorMade Tourino Stand Bag for under $60 bucks. Yes, really. It's just a little more than a dozen golf balls cost at the local golf shop.

What NOT To Buy!
Usually, we dedicate this blog to helping you find the right stuff to buy online, but once in while we can't help but show you a few things you shouldn't. And by shouldn't, that means if in case you do decide to buy these, don't tell anyone. Keep it to yourself. Trust us.

Callaway Slippers and Travel Mug: Let's see. Slippers than look like golf shoes. That's a good idea...not. ($34.99)

Golf ties: Under no circumstances. Nope. Never. ($19.99)

Shatter Sports Golf Ball: Uh...no. Don't be THAT guy. ($9.99)

Golf Motif cat/dog bowl: If you buy this, your pet better have no more than a 5-handicap. Boy howdy, this is not good.

Digital scorekeepers: I mean, really. Have we reached the point where we are using technology to go in reverse? What could be easier than a scorecard and a pencil? Better yet, a pencil with an eraser? ($ Varies)

Tabasco Golf Shirts: What does hot sauce have to do with golf shirts anyway? If anything, don't you want to avoid the two coming into contact? Yes, we are all for being patriotic. But not in some sort of weird, Salvador Dali-my-golf-clubs-are-falling-out-of-my-bag-heaven-help-me sort of way. ($52.50)

The Potty Putter: I can't believe I even had the time to add this one. Look at that model. I'll bet his mom is really proud. Talk about a water haza--I'm not going there.

There you have it folks. And while I don't recommend you buy these items, I can't help but think each would make a fantastic gift for that special someone in your foursome. Yeah, you know who I mean.

Walk a day in Tiger Woods' shoes.

Well, not exactly. But you can wear his golf shoes now at a hefty discount. Originally $180, you can the '07 version of Nike Sp8 Tiger Woods Limited Edition kicks for only $77.

Sizes are limited, but if you're between a 10 and a 11.5, you'd be crazy to not buy a pair of one of the most technologically advanced golf shoes around. What a great deal!

Go for the Green Ride.

While it's becoming more and more difficult to find gas powered carts (outside of the maintenance kind), battery-powered golf carts still hog up a big chunk of energy. So what's a golfer to do if you want to be eco-friendly without pushing a cart or carrying a bag?

Enter the solar-powered golf cart.

Using 72 "photovoltaic cells built into the roof that collect solar energy", this sweet ride provides up to 33% more usage than standard electric carts. And while that's pretty cool, I'm most impressed to learn that this cart goes up 24 mph--a speed that's twice as fast as my morning commute on the infamous 405 freeway here in Los Angeles. Hmmm, this cart does have headlights, turn signals and a horn...might not be a bad option now that I think about it.

Taste the Rainbow.

Ok, sure, we like Skittles. Say what you will about that and other forms of rainbow tasting. But when it comes to grips, the Iomic grip company delivers not only some of the coolest looking and most colorful grips around, but also grips that are made of an interesting Elastomer that frankly, do not feel like any other grip we've tried. The combination of firmness with tackiness and shock absorption is welcoming, and they also hold up very well in the rain. My only gripe? The butt diameter is smaller than most grips. But if that's not a problem for you, give them a try. Putter grips also available. ($16)

You have to hand it to Boo Weekley.

Camo (that's short for camouflage for all you people west of the Mississippi) had never been en vogue until he popularized it with his po'dunk personality and style. Nonetheless, we know the truth behind Boo's schtick, and while he may not appear to the bet sharpest tool in the shed, we no doubt think he's one of the coolest, most savvy and most fun-to-watch players on the PGA Tour.

Oh yeah, about this wedge: It's camo. It's Cleveland. It kicks some serious possum a-word. ($129)
